Great Britain 1782 guinea rev G75-3286.jpg

This specimen was lot 3286 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Guinea, 1782. George III. Obverse, fourth laureate head of king. Reverse 'rose' shield of arms. Well struck with nice glowing surfaces and an orange peripheral tone. This coin is a tough date in high grade, and Dr Terner did not have a 1782 Guinea in his collection. NGC graded MS-62." This type was struck 1774-86 and is the first really common type for George III. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold, .2246 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: S.3728; Fr-355; KM 604.
