Sincona sale 75, lot 257

This specimen was lot 257 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Grossbritannien | Königreich. George III. 1760-1820. Guinea 1779, London. Fourth laureate head. NGC MS61. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Extraordinary condition.)"

This type, the fourth used during George's long reign, is noted for 1774-86. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.
