This specimen was lot 1801 in Sincona sale 82 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,150 CHF (about US$1,539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "George III. 1760-1820. Guinea 1778, London. Fourth laureate head. Selten (Rare). NGC AU Details. Leicht gereinigt (Lightly cleaned)." This bust appeared on the guinea 1774-86. By this time, the mint had ceased to produce anything but gold coins and Maundy sets, causing a grave shortage of circulating media. Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen 8.34 g.
