This specimen was lot 191 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $535.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, cob 2 reales, 1636P, rare. Full and bold date and oMP, most of shield and cross but peripheries flat, minimal corrosion, nice toning. Recovered from: Concepcion, sunk in 1641 off Hispaniola." This specimen is a silver cob two reales struck at Mexico City 1621-65. Specimens with clear dates are unusual, particularly on salvaged specimens. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to 0.917 fine silver.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 6.10 grams.
Catalog reference: S-M19; KM-33 for type, Cayón-unlisted.
