Mexico 1639/7-Mo P 2 reales
This specimen was lot 181 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $540. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO, Mexico City, cob 2 reales, 1639/7 P, very rare. Full 639/7 of date outside of off-center shield, good full cross, thin from light surface corrosion, one edge-split, interesting and rather rare (about five known) "skip-date" overdate that might mean 1638 does not exist in this denomination (nor clean-date 1639, for that matter). With original certificate from Captain Tracy Bowden through his contract with the Dominican Republic. Recovered from: Concepción, sunk in 1641 off Hispaniola." This specimen is a silver cob two reales struck at Mexico City 1621-65. Specimens with clear dates are unusual to the point that many dates are unlisted in the SCWC. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to 0.917 fine silver.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 5.93 grams.
