This specimen was lot 8684 in Ponterio sale 153 (Baltimore, March 2010), where it sold for $218.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Real, 1753-J. Ex: Whittier Collection. Nicely toned. NGC AU-58." This type was struck 1751-60 for king Ferdinand VI. This date is unusual in having a single letter assayer. As a class, pillar coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. One reales are quite scarce.

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine silver, .100 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10305, KM-52; Gilboy L-1-2b.
