This specimen was lot 31099 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $4,920. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Peru: Philip V gold Cob 2 Escudos 1721 L-M AU58 PCGS, Lima mint. A singular representative of this conditionally difficult gold type showcasing bold central detailing, accented throughout by pale clay red tones which complement the satiny golden fields to great visual effect." Assayer M is recorded for 1709-28. Cobs were struck at Lima until 1752, twenty years after Mexico City had switched to milled coinage. This type was struck 1701-44 and is rare, especially with a legible date.
