This specimen was lot 21139 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Krone (4 Mark), 1659. Frederik III. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. A well struck and nicely preserved example of the type with lovely old cabinet tone. The piece exhibits nice bold design features with even wear on the high points, only a couple of insignificant areas of weakness on the reverse are noticed mentioned for accuracy. The surfaces exhibit lovely mottled gray patina with blue and golden hues offering good eye appeal. Clearly an example which sat for a prolonged period of time undisturbed." This is one of several closely related kroner or four mark pieces issued 1659-60 (Dav-3576, Dav-3576A and Dav-3578). King Frederick III ruled 1648-70; one may assume the obverse design had political significance at the time. Danish crowns of the seventeenth century range from the scarce to the obscenely rare. Either they were melted extensively or the poverty of the king prevented large issues or both. The similar Dav-3578 has "DOMINVS PROVIDEBIT" around the king's monogram instead of the "*IIII*MARCK*DANSKE*" shown here.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 22.27 g, 0.671 fine silver.
