Goldberg sale 69, lot 4679
France 1808W franc rev Goldberg 69-4679.jpg
Sincona sale 6, lot 1182

The first specimen was lot 4679 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $345. The catalog description [2] noted, "France. Franc, 1808-W (Lille). Napoleon I. Laureate head. NGC graded MS-61." The second specimen was lot 1189 in Sincona sale 6 (Zurich, May 2012), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$___ including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,

"FRANKREICH Premier Empire. Napoleon I. 1804-1814. 1 Franc 1808, Lille. Kl. Schrötlingsf. Sehr schön. (France, Napoleon, 1804-14, one franc of 1808, Lille mint. Slight adjustment marks, very fine.)"

This was struck at Lille under the régime of Napoleon as emperor. The type was struck 1807-08. However, despite being in production for little over a year, more were made (11.8 million) than of the subsequent type (F.205) minted 1809-14 (10.0 million). It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[1] notes 16 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is common.

Recorded mintage: 2,421,262[1]

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819, this specimen 4.89 g.
