Goldberg sale 69, lot 4734
France 1853A franc rev Goldberg 69-4734.jpg

This specimen was lot 4734 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description [2] noted, "France. Proof Franc, 1853-A. Napoleon III. Bare head right. Light tan toning with brilliant mirror surfaces. PCGS graded Proof 64." This coin was struck at Paris under the régime of Napoleon III (1852-70). It is a better date of a type struck 1853-63 but the proofs are rare. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[1] notes 19 dates for the type, some very rare.

Recorded mintage: 182,412[1].

Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, reeded edge. It was designed by Jean-Jacques Barre, 1793-1855.

Catalog reference: F.214/1, KM-779.1; Gad-460.
