Italy 1990 500 lire rev DSLR.jpg

The specimen shown is from a type struck in Rome for Italy 1982-95 and 2000-01. This type was one of the first bimetallic coins struck and is often found with the inner core loose and free to turn within the outer ring. Several dates were struck only for the collector sets. This denomination proved popular and convenient for various silver commemoratives issued until the introduction of the euro in 2002 (see the "centennial" and "Dante" commemoratives).

Recorded mintage: 130,000,000 plus 9,400 proofs.

Specification: 6.8 g, "bronzital" (aluminum bronze) core with a "acmonital" (stainless steel) ring, 25.8 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 111.
