This specimen was lot 2654 in Goldberg sale 109 (Los Angeles, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Genoa. Lira, 1794. Crowned and supported arms. Reverse: John the Baptist standing holding staff with banner. NGC graded MS-63." This is a seldom seen type struck 1793-96 in the last years of the republic. Genoa was occupied by Napoleon and converted into the Ligurian Republic; she never recovered her independence. In 1815, Metternich awarded Genoa to Sardinia and followed her into the kingdom of Italy during the unification of 1860-61.
