Goldberg sale 72, lot 5653
Germany 1933A 5 mark rev Goldberg 72-5653.jpg
Künker sale 294, lot 4445

The first specimen was lot 5653 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $523. The catalog description[1] noted, "Germany. 5 Reichsmark, 1933-A. Martin Luther - 450th Anniversary of his birth. Lovely toning. ANACS graded Proof 65 Cameo." The second specimen was lot 4445 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €420 (about US$566 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DRITTES REICH, 5 Reichsmark 1933, A. Luther. Polierte Platte. (Germany, Third Reich, five mark of 1933, 450th anniversary of Martin Luther's birth. Proof.)"

Altho technically an issue of Nazi Germany, the design makes no reference to the new regime and was probably prepared before Hitler took over. Though the size of a half dollar, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger five mark of the Weimar Republic such as the Goethe commemorative (Dav-974). This type was also minted at Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J"). It was accompanied by a two mark (KM 79).

Recorded mintage: 108,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 13.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, .401 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-80; J-353.
