It is scarce and normally appears in low grade. Even so, it is much more available than the ''quart d'écu à la cravate'' or the ''quart d'écu juvenile''. Large bust and small bust varieties exist.

The first specimen was lot 773 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €80 (about US$101 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR quart d'écu de Flandre, 1686LL, Lille. D/ B. dr. à d., coiffé d'une longue perruque. R/ Ecu couronné, écartelé de France, Bourgogne moderne et Bourgogne ancien. Rare. Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver quarter écu of Flanders of 1686, Lille mint. Obverse: draped bust to right with long wig; reverse: crowned arms of France and Burgundy. Rare, fine.)"

We grade this coin as Good to Very Good. The second specimen was lot 1846 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €650 (about US$876 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/4 Ecu de Flandre (quart-écu "carambole") 1686, LL, Lille. R Justiert, sehr schön +. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, quarter écu of Flanders of 1686, Lille mint. Scarce, adjustment mark, very fine or better.)"

The third specimen was lot 1209 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €300 (about US$385 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR quart d'écu de Flandre, 1686 LL, Lille. D/ B. dr. à d., coiffé d'une longue perruque. R/ Ecu couronné, écartelé de France, Bourgogne moderne et Bourgogne ancien. Dupl-1511; Gad. 149; Delm. 421. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver quarter écu of Flanders of 1686, Lille mint. Obverse: draped bust to right with long wig; reverse: crowned arms of France and Burgundy. Rare, fine to very fine.)"

Note the Lille mintmark later became "W". This type was struck only at Lille using either an "LL" mintmark or a crowned "L". It is scarce and normally appears in low grade. Even so, it is much more available than the quart d'écu à la cravate or the quart d'écu juvenile. Large bust and small bust varieties exist.

Recorded mintage: 348,158.

Specification: 9.41 g, .857 fine silver, 29 mm diameter, lettered edge; the first specimen is 9,02 g. The third specimen is 9,06 g.
