This specimen was lot 2619 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. 1/2 Ecu Carambole, 1686-IL (Lille) Nearly EF. Louis XIV. Bust right. Reverse: Crowned shield with arms of France, Old and New Burgundy. For Flanders and Strasbourg. Adjustment marks and a few obverse scratches. Rare type. Nearly Extremely Fine." Shown is a demi-écu de Flandre, of a type struck for Flanders 1685-89. Only Paris, Lille and Amiens struck this type. Standard half écus were 0.917 fine silver. Lille, a new mint for the king, initially used a crowned L mintmark, then the double "LL" shown here, then finally a "W", which last was used until the 1850's.
