Sincona sale 79, lot 1252

This specimen was lot 1252 in Sincona sale 79 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 26,000 CHF (about US$31,161 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, George II. 1727-1760. Guinea 1731, London. Second young laureate head, with E.I.C. (East India Company) below. Rare. NGC MS61. Magnificent condition." This bust was used on the guinea 1730-32. This type was struck 1729 and 1731-32 from East Indian gold, hence the added letters. Its catalog value is double that of the regular issue (Fr-339). Five guineas were also struck with the "EIC". Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 8.38 g.

Catalog reference: KM 573.1, Spink 3673. Bull 586. Fr-340.
