Stephen Album sale 50, lot 642

This specimen was lot 642 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "DANISH INDIA: TRANQUEBAR: Frederik III, 1648-1670, lead kas, ND, crowned F // 3 R D, said to be an anagram for Latin "Fredericus tertius rex Daniae; overstruck on a kas of Christian IV (the C 4 and part of his crown are visible on the obverse of this piece, uncertain host reverse type), VF, RRRR, ex Brunn Online Auction 1807 lot 5130, ex Solar Collection. This is a historically important type, not noted in the three publications cited here, nor in Sieg's, nor with any of the specimens sold by Brunn. This piece (4.04 g) and the one sold in our Auction 20, lot 1702 (4.37 g) reveal that this type retains the roughly 4.00 g weight standard of Christian IV, reduced to about 2.85 g for Frederik III (individual specimen[s] of Frederik III vary from about 2.20 g to 3.65 g, the range of all other examples in this auction). It is possible that the earlier issues of Frederik III adhere to a standard of about 3.0 g, reduced to about 2.5 g towards the end of his reign." The Danish fort at Tranquebar was sold to the British in 1845. This lead cash was struck in over ninety varieties during the reign of Frederik III (died 1670).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: lead, this specimen 2.88 g.
