Jean Elsen sale 120, lot 1169
Canada 1983 50 dollars rev JElsen 120-1169.jpg

This specimen was lot 1169 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,480 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CANADA, Elisabeth II (1952- ), AV 50 dollars, 1983, Maple Leaf. Fleur de Coin. (Canada, Elizabeth II, gold fifty dollars of 1983, maple leaf, uncirculated.)"

Canada, enviously watching the krugerrand conquer world bullion markets in the mid-1970's, decided to enter her own product in 1979, dubbed the Maple Leaf. The type was modified in 1983 to indicate .9999 purity and struck in this form 1983-89. Maple Leafs (Leaves?) are still in production but use the current bust of the queen.

Recorded mintage: 843,000.

Specification: 31.10 g, .9999 fine gold, 1.000 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 125.2, Fr-24.
