Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1722

This specimen was lot 1722 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €260 (about US$352 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, BOLOGNE, Gouvernement révolutionnaire (1796-1797), AR 5 paoli (mezzo scudo), 1796. D/ Ecu entre deux rameaux. R/ La Vierge à l'enfant sur une nuée au-dessus de la ville. Belle patine. Petites taches. Superbe. (Italy, Bologna, revolutionary government, 1796-97, silver five paoli or half scudo of 1796. Obverse: shield between two branches; reverse: Madonna and Child on a cloud over a view of the city. Nice patina, light stains, Extremely Fine.)"

This date is a two year type struck in 1796-97 for Pius VI (1775-99) at the Bologna mint. In Bologna, half scudo = five paoli = 50 bolognini. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 14.50 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 14,45 g.

Catalog reference: KM 338, Munt. 4.
