(duchy of Brabant, Brussels besieged by Alexander Farnese (1579-80), uniface silver 36 sols of 1580, with St. Michael's head helmeted. Obverse: arms of St. Michael slaying the dragon divide the date, value above. Very rare, nice patina, very Fine - Extremely Fine. In July 1579, the Prince of Parma isolated Brussels by occupying the fort of Willebroeck and closing the canal connecting the city to the Scheldt. Confronted with the shortage of cash, the city authorities obtained from the States General the authorization to mint gold and silver emergency coins to circulate at the same rate as the gold crown (60 sols), the States écu (36 sols) and the half-écu of the States (18 sols). 782 gold pieces of 60 sols, 12,400 pieces of 36 sols and 3,775 pieces of 18 sols were struck from September 1579 to August 1580. The garrison then succeeded in clearing the city and re-establishing its communications.)"

The second specimen was lot 1144 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,712 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
