Colombia 1866-P 10 pesos

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 12234

This specimen was lot 12234 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description^[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1866 10 Pesos. Popayán mint. MS-64 (PCGS). Frosty and beautiful light yellow gold, extraordinary quality for this issue. The dies are crude, including a rim cud at 11:00 on the obverse that matches the one on the Sedwick specimen, but there are no post-striking flaws to describe. Probably unique in this quality. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Swiss Bank Corp.'s Auction 34, January 1994, lot 3148." This type was struck at Bogotá (Fr-102) 1862-66, Medellin (Fr-104) 1864-71 and Popayan (shown here) 1863-70. While not cheap, it is considerably more available than the five pesos.
