The first specimen was lot 1617 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $499. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Reales, 1685-R. Charles II (1665-1700). Two full dates. VERY FINE." The second specimen was lot 5942 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $310.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Peru. Cob 8 Reales, 1685-R (Lima). Charles II, 1665-1700. Attractive surfaces. About Very Fine." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1684-1700 for Charles II of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without and round "royal" specimens are rare.
