This specimen was lot 34787 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: George IV 1/2 Crown 1821 MS65 PCGS. Lightly Garnished. Blanketed in intermingled steel and olive tone over well-kept surfaces displaying underlying mint luster. Currently exceeded by only a single example in the PCGS Census. Ex. Trident Collection." This type was issued 1820-21 and 1823 only and is expensive in nice condition. In 1817, the coinage was reformed and the mint reorganized. Modern equipment was installed and all the old, worn, clipped and counterfeit coinage called in and reminted. Henceforth, each denomination was issued annually instead of spasmodically; it is considered the beginning of modern coinage in Britain.
Recorded mintage: 1,435,000.
Specification: 14.14 g, 0.925 fine silver, .420 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 676, S-3807.
