Heritage sale 3082, lot 34101

This specimen was lot 34101 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Victoria 6 Pence 1865 MS66 PCGS. Die # 19. Visually outstanding with extremely smooth, mark-free surfaces and tone that adds to the eye-appeal on both sides. The single finest graded example of the date at PCGS." This type was struck in large numbers 1838-66 yet circulated extensively. Few survive in high grade. Die numbers were added 1864-66. Researchers have offered various theories as to why tho it seems likely that mint officials wanted to analyze die life.

Recorded mintage: 1,632,000.

Specification: 2.82 g (not 3.01 g as reported in the SCWC), 0.925 fine silver, 19.3 mm diameter.
