Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 51023
SB823-51023r.jpg

This specimen was lot 51023 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown (5 Shillings), ND (1612-13). London Mint; mm: Tower. James I. NGC VF-25. Second coinage, third crowned bust. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust right; Reverse: Crowned coat-of-arms. Seemingly a bit conservatively graded, this wholesome specimen yields a delightful golden-yellow appearance with some enticing contrast among the devices. From the Augustana Collection." This gold crown of James' second issue was accompanied by a rose ryal (Fr-230), angel, unite (Fr-234), spur ryal (Fr-231), double crown (Fr-235), half angel (Fr-233) and half crown (Fr-237). With the accession of James I we drop "England" as the country name and adopt the current "Great Britain."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.25 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: S-2625; Fr-236; KM-34.
