Künker sale 263, lot 969

This specimen was lot 969 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €480 (about US$620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"JÜLICH-BERG, HERZOGTUM Wilhelm V. 1539-1592. Taler 1567, Mülheim. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Julich-Berg, William V, 1539-92, thaler of 1567, Mulheim mint. Planchet cracks, very fine.)"

The duke of Berg, also duke of Cleve and Julich, count of Mark and Ravensburg, ruled a substantial territory in the lower Rhineland surrounding the archbishopric of Cologne. This type was issued 1567-74. When the last duke died in 1609, Brandenburg and Pfalz fought a war over the legacy and in 1624 partitioned it, an opening act of the Thirty Years War.

Recorded mintage: 63,000 (including Dav-8932 and Dav-8933A).

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM MB25, Dav-8933; Noss 331.
