Steve Album sale 30, lot 1337
Ragusa SA30-1337r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1337 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "RAGUSA: AR ducato, 1797-SB, unusually excellent strike, with no adjustment marks and only the slightest touch of weakness at the rim, probably should have been graded higher, NGC graded EF45." This coin is an example of a type struck 1722-23 and 1797 for the Republic of Ragusa, a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. At the time, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. Ragusa was occupied by French troops in 1805 and annexed by Austria in 1814. The SCWC doesn't give its exact specification but it is roughly equal to contemporary German gulden.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.37 g, 0.489 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-15.
