Stephen Album sale 50, lot 3185

This specimen was lot 3185 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "RAGUSA: Republic, AR ducato, 1723-SB, Crowned ornate arms // St. Blasius standing facing, holding crozier, a couple light scratches on the reverse, About VF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." The Republic of Ragusa was a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. In the eighteenth century, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. This type is listed for 1723 and 1797. The "SB" is not a mintmark but an abbreviation of "Saint Blasius", who figures on the obverse. The ducato was two-thirds of a tallero, the crown-size coin.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 19.5 g, 0.566 fine silver, ornamented edge.

Catalog reference: KM-15.
