H3094-35052r.jpg

This specimen was lot 35052 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $12,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ragusa: Republic Tallero (Vizlin) 1725 VF30 NGC. The extremely rare first year-of-issue and first die style for this famed "Rektoratstaler" (Rector's taler), and perhaps the most iconic emission of the Republic. Noted by the Standard Catalog of World Coins simply as "Rare" without an indication of price given, we have not been able to locate a single other example coming to auction in recent decades, with this being the sole representative yet certified by either of the major grading services. Though awarded a relatively low technical grade, the piece continues to show accents of golden tone silhouetting the raised features, adjustments on the whole appearing quite light and not to be mistaken for damage on this problem-free specimen. A very special opportunity for the series collector." The Republic of Ragusa was a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. In the eighteenth century, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. Ragusa was occupied by French troops in 1805 and annexed by Austria in 1814. The SCWC notes this type for 1725, 1730-38, 1743 and 1747.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.

Specification: silver.
