Ragusa 1794 2 ducati Dav-1641
This specimen was lot 1549 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "RAGUSA: Republic, AR 2 ducati (libertina), 1794, bust of Maria Theresia right, light tooling marks, but free of the usual adjustment marks, VF." A silver ducato was 2/3 of a tallero, making this coin 1-1/3 tallero. This type was struck 1792-95 only for the Republic of Ragusa, a Christian enclave on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. At the time, it was an independent city-state surrounded and protected by the Ottoman Empire, which ruled most of the Balkans. Ragusa was occupied by French troops in 1805 and annexed by Austria in 1814. We believe the bust on the obverse is intended to be allegorical and not specifically Maria Theresia, who had died twelve years before.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: silver.
