Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 23273

This specimen was lot 23273 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description^[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. Rupee, AH 1243 'Year 35' (1827/8). Mysore Mint. Krishna Raja Wodeyar. NGC MS-67. In the name of Shah Alam II. Offering quality that is seemingly unheard of, this staggering Gem presents a sharp strike with bold calligraphy, a steely gray color, and tremendously brilliant luster emanating throughout. The regnal year on issues such as this remain a mystery, as there is no correlation of actual royal chronology. As such, it is the AH date that likely indicates the year in which it was struck. Rather interestingly, on this example, the AH date is rendered left to right rather than how it appears on most from the series." This type is listed in the SCWC for AH 1215-1248 with various regnal years, usually garbled. Krishnaraja Wadiyar III was maharaja of Mysore after Hyder Ali and Tipu Ali were overthrown by the British. He himself was set aside by the British in 1831, who ruled the kingdom directly until 1881, when the state was restored to his adopted son, Chamarajendra Wadiyar X.
