This specimen was lot 2461 in Goldberg sale 78 (Los Angeles, January 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Great Britain. Guinea, 1787. George III. Obverse, 5th laureate head of king. Reverse: Crowned spade shaped shield. Glossy and well struck with much eye catching luster. PCGS graded Genuine About Uncirculated, Details (Cleaning)." This type, the commonest of several used during George's long reign, is noted for 1787-99. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.
