Great Britain 1788 guinea
This specimen was lot 2764 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$831 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"GREAT BRITAIN. George III. 1760-1820 Guinea 1788. Gutes sehr schön. (kingdom of Great Britain, George III, 1760-1820, guinea of 1788, Good very fine)"
This type, the commonest of several used during George's long reign, is noted for 1787-99. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.
