Toluca 1915 5 centavos

Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72617

This specimen was lot 72617 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $288. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Estado de Mexico. Toluca. 5 Centavos, 1915. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. Struck in cardboard. A neat piece from the revolutionary period exhibiting nice even wear." This enigmatic piece accompanies some countermarked coinage issued as the same time. Many municipalities, unable to obtain regular coinage, used cardboard or paper chits to keep their bus or streetcar lines running during the Revolution. This type straddles the line between coinage and paper money.
