This specimen was lot 1219 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €140 (about US$204 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Jan zonder Vrees (1404-1419), AR dubbele groot braspenning, 1409-1416, Gent. 1e uitgifte. Λ zonder dwarsstreep. Vz/ Wapenschilden van Bourgondië en Vlaanderen, daarboven toernooihelm. Kz/ Kruis met in de hoeken lelies en leeuwen. Interpunctie met : op vz. en : op kz. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, John the Fearless, 1404-19, silver double groat, Ghent mint, first issue. Obverse: helmeted arms of Burgundy and Flanders; reverse: cross cantonned with lilies and lions. Both sides punctuated with colons. Very Fine.)"
Jean was duke of Burgundy when in 1407, he arranged the murder of the duke of Orleans, setting off a civil war in France between his faction and the Armagnacs. He did not participate in the battle of Agincourt in 1415 which allowed Henry V of England to occupy northern France. He was lured to a meeting with his rival, the dauphin Charles, and murdered in 1419. This dubbele groot was accompanied by a groot and halve groot.
