This specimen was lot 70845 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Weimar Republic. 5 Mark, 1935-A. Berlin Mint. NGC PROOF-63. Hindenburg Issue. An attractive Proof with shimmering, flashy fields, sharp strike, and pervasive almond to russet toning throughout." This type was struck 1935-36 to honor recent deceased war hero Paul von Hindenberg. It is common except in proof. In 1936, the Nazis added a swastika to the reverse. The Berlin mint also struck five mark with the Potdam garrison church on the obverse (KM 83).
Recorded mintage: 19,325,000 + 23,407,000 of KM 83.
Specification: 13.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, 29 mm diameter.
