This specimen was lot 976 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €550 (about US$711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖLN, STADT Reichstaler 1568, mit Titel Maximilians II. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Cologne, thaler of 1568, in the name of Maximilian II. Toned, attractive, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire. This type of 1568-74 is the only reasonably available thaler from this locale during the sixteenth century.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
