Cologne 1557 goldgulden Fr-808
This specimen was lot 4395 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it sold for 2,100 CHF (about US$2,794 including buyer's fees).
The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Köln, Erzbistum Anton von Schauenburg, 1556-58. Goldgulden 1557. Christus auf Thron sitzend; darunter Kölner Wappenschild. Rv. Im Dreipass Schild Schauenburg-Glücksburg, in den Ecken die Wappen von Mainz, Trier und Pfalz. Die Jahreszahl in der Umschrift. Sehr selten. Druckstelle am Rand. Sehr schön. (Archbishopric of Cologne, Anton von Schauenburg, 1556-58, gold gulden of 1557. Obverse: Christ enthroned, arms below; reverse: in trilobe the arms of Schauenburg-Glücksburg, Mainz, Trier and Pfalz, date at left. Very rare, dented rim, very fine)."
The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire.
