Revision as of 20:27, 26 December 2021
This specimen was lot 1942 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 15,000 (about US$19,765 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"20 Mark 1882. München Sehr selten. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, twenty mark of 1882, Munich mint, very rare, choice extremely fine.)"
Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. The gold issues of this locale are scanty and rare.
Recorded mintage: 3,061 plus proofs.
Specification: 7.96 g, .900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW, this specimen 7.95 g.
