This twenty-five centavos was issued as a temporary expedient during a currency crisis when a number of Guatemalan banks collapsed. The minting of silver had ceased before 1900. In 1926, the currency was reformed and the quetzal introduced to replace the peso (1 quetzal = 60 pesos). The government abolished the private issue of banknotes. This type is scarce in nice condition.
