The specimen shown is of a type struck only in 1922. The minting of silver had ceased before 1900. In 1926, the currency was reformed and the quetzal introduced to replace the peso (1 quetzal = 60 pesos). The government abolished the private issue of banknotes, the abuse of which had caused a currency crisis.
