This specimen was lot 24104 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $23,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "A Very Rare Offering of a Pair of George VI Proofs--George VI Proof Halfpenny 1947-(P), Perth mint, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. Mostly faded red throughout with glossy surfaces indicative of Australian proof strikings of the era. Close inspection yields some iridescent tone mixed into the surfaces as well as some central as-made planchet chatter (similar to the proof penny of the same date in this sale) that remains on the highpoints. No post-strike flaws are apparent. An extremely rare issue for Australia, with only a handful of examples known to the market. A major opportunity for the specialist and one that is likely to remain unduplicated for the foreseeable future." The SCWC does not record why proofs are so rare for this date, which is otherwise common. The type was issued 1939-48 from Bombay, Perth and Melbourne.
Sterling coinage was struck for several countries besides Great Britain, including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, Fiji and New Guinea. All converted to decimal coinage in the 1960's.
Recorded mintage: 9,293,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 5.9 g, bronze, 25.5 mm diameter.
