This specimen was lot 25141 in Heritage sale 61487 (Dallas, TX, May 2025), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Peru]]. Charles II 1/2 Real 1685-L VF Details (Holed) NGC, Lima mint, A well-struck survivor and while NGC notes this as Royal coinage due to its particularly round shape, this may have been a post-mint modification. From the Monedero Collection of Peru and Latin American Coins." This type was struck 1684-1701 for the degenerate Charles II of Spain. The Lima mint reopened in 1684, having been shuttered by orders from Spain in 1660. It is catalogued with a mintmark and assayer's initials but we don't think any were ever present on this die. Half real cobs are surprisingly scarce, this being the first of the type we have posted. The auctioneers hint that this specimen was clipped; it is short weight but that could be due to the two holes.

H61487-25141r.jpg

This specimen was lot 25141 in Heritage sale 61487 (Dallas, TX, May 2025), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru. It is catalogued with a mintmark and assayer's initials in the SCWC and Cayón but we don't think any were ever present on this die. Half real cobs are surprisingly scarce, this being the first of the type we have posted. The auctioneers hint that this specimen was clipped; it is short weight but that could be due to the two holes.

Recorded mintage: 1,009,154 per Numista.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 1.20 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-7144, KM 22, Cal-122.
