Steve Album Auction 52, lot 1215

This specimen was lot 1215 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "CAMBODIA: Ang Duong, 1847-1860, AE pe, CS1208 (1847), PCGS graded AU55, ex Howard A. Daniel III Collection." The SCWC notes that some are known with a silver wash. We don't know why this example is only half the weight specified in the SCWC. The hamsa, the mythical bird depicted on the obverse, is mentioned in Sanskrit texts as the vehicle of Brahma, Gayatri, Saraswati, and Vishvakarma. Cambodia was colonized by the French in the 1860's and incorporated into French Indochina in the 1880's, thwarting the development of Cambodian coinage.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4-4.6 g, copper, this specimen 1.98 g.

Catalog reference: KM-2.
