Sincona sale 23, lot 3295

This specimen was lot 3295 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$377 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"UNGARN, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780 Taler 1746. Kremnitz. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Hungary, Maria Theresia (1740-80), thaler of 1746, Kremnitz mint, extremely fine.)"

This type, struck 1744-48 in several varieties, is common. It is the second type struck for Maria Theresia, who succeeded Karl VI in 1740. Hungary stood by Maria Theresia during the War of the Austrian Succession, where Frederick the Great of Prussia invaded and annexed Silesia.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.82 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 28.79 g.

Catalog reference: Huszar 1671. Dav-1129, KM-337.2.
