Steve Album sale 51, lot 3197

This specimen was lot 3197 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "PAPAL STATES: Pius IX, 1846-1878, AR scudo, 1846, an UNC coin that has some unfortunate toning and adhesions on the obverse." The early coinage of the Papal States used an antique monetary system. After 1830, five quattrini = one baiocco; 100 baiocchi = one scudo. This scudo was struck at the Rome mint 1846-48 (with Cerbara's signature) and 1850-54 (without).

Recorded mintage: 12,205.

Specification: 26.87 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, reeded edge, engraved by Niccolò Cerbara.

Catalog reference: Berman-3309, KM-1336.1, Dav-194.
