Papal States 1846-R scudo Dav-192
The first specimen was lot 1299 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,145.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Scudo, 1846/5-R. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. RARE. Unlisted overdate. Even toning with strong luster." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. The scudo superseded the piastra after 1740. This type is noted for 1835-46 and is somewhat available.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 26.87 g, 0.900 fine silver.
