Ponterio sale 164, lot 3005

This specimen was lot 3005 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $4,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Daler, 1561. Erik XIV (1560-68). Slightly weak strike in the center of the reverse. Minor surface corrosion and encrustation. VERY FINE." Erik XIV (1543-77) succeeded his father Gustav Vasa in 1560. After displaying symptoms of insanity, he was deposed by his half brother John III in 1568 and spent the rest of his life in prison. This type was struck 1561-68 in modest numbers. One daler was four mark or 32 öre.
