This specimen was lot 10173 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €288 (about US$300). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 8 Skilling, 1630. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." Throughout the sixteenth century, one speciedaler was 96 skilling; at some point in the 1620's, it was raised to 144 skilling and then back to 96 skilling. When the dust had settled, the speciedaler, formerly four marks or 1⅓ krone, was now six marks or 1½ krone. This type was struck 1630 only along with a four skilling and two skilling. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648), king of Denmark and duke of Schleswig-Holstein, had a long but only moderately successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.38 g, 0.875 fine silver, 20 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-122; Hede-141; Sieg-60; Schou-14; Bruun-5596.
