Künker sale 406, lot 4449

This specimen was lot 4449 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,887 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand I. 1522-1558-1564. Guldentaler (60 Kreuzer) 1563, Kuttenberg. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. (Austria, Ferdinand I, 1558-64, guldenthaler of sixty kreuzer of 1563, Kuttenberg mint. Handsome patina, very fine or better.)"

This guldenthaler was one of several struck at Kuttenberg in the early 1560's (Ferdinand died in 1564). More were struck at Prague and Joachimsthal. The SCWC catalog numbers listed below are not matched to the mint. The guldenthaler would soon be shortened to gulden and its weight slide from five-sixths to about two-thirds of a thaler. Bohemia was not added to the Hapsburg dominions until 1526.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 24.57 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB141 or MB 152 or MB153, Dav-36; Dietiker 42; Halacka 73; Voglh. 60 II.
